Texas Commercial Vehicle Operation

(Review TX Commercial CDL Handbook, Section 14)

The Texas Commercial Vehicle Operation is the very first test you will be allowed to take at the TXDPS office. Understandably, it is said to be one of the hardest tests that you will be given. Our hope is with our testing format and proper studying, you will PASS the FIRST TIME!! It is a requirement when trying to obtain your Texas Class A, B or C CDL permit and must be passed before you are allowed to take the second test.

General Knowledge

(Review TX Commercial CDL Handbook, Sections 1, 2, 3, 12 & 13)

The General Knowledge test is considered har in comparison to the HAZMAT test, which is considered the hardest of all the tests. It will be the second test administered after passing the Texas Commercial Vehicle Operation test. You are required to score at least 80%, answering a minimum of 40 questions correctly, out of a total of 50 questions. With access to repetitive testing, you are given the opportunity to familiarize yourself with a range of questions & answers, giving you an extra boost of confidence to ensure success. Our hope is with our testing format and proper studying, you will PASS the FIRST TIME!!

Air Brakes

(TX Commercial CDL Handbook, Section 5)

The Air Brakes test is composed of 25 questions. You will need to answer at least 20 questions correctly to receive the minimum passing score of 80%. This will test your Air Brakes Test 3 knowledge and understanding, we highly recommend reading over your handbook to become familiar with the range of information that may be covered during your exam.

Combination Vehicle

(TX Commercial CDL Handbook, Section 6)

The Combination Vehicle test requires a minimum passing score of 80%. That equates to answering 16 out of 20 questions correctly. With the successful completion of the Combination Vehicle test, you will be given the opportunity to drive a variety of vehicles, making you an asset to many companies! The endorsement code (X) authorizes the operation of a combination of hazardous material and tank vehicles.

Endorsements gives access to a broader selection of job opportunities and the potential to make more money! Endorsements allow you to operate certain types of commercial
motor vehicles and transport specific items. In some cases, additional testing is required, if you already have a CDL you will be required to hold your CLP for that endorsement for at least 14 days before it can be added to your CDL.

HAZMAT - Hazardous Materials

(Section 9 of the TX Commercial CDL Handbook)

The Hazmat Endorsement (H) exam is composed of 30 questions, and you must answer at least 24 questions correctly to receive the minimum passing score of 80%. Having the HAZMAT endorsement on your license puts you a step ahead of your competition! Once you have completed your scheduled road test you may be able to go directly into the driver license office and take the HAZMAT test! If given the opportunity, remember to study your
HAZMAT questions and answers so that you can complete the testing after you pass your road test!!

Tanker

(Section 8 of the TX Commercial CDL Handbook)

The Tanker Endorsement (N) test must be passed with a score of at least 80%. You will be given 20 multiple choice questions and must answer at least 16 questions correctly. This endorsement allows you to haul any liquid or gaseous material in a tank or tanks with a capacity of 1,000 gallons or more that is permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.

 

Doubles / Triples

(Section 7 of the TX Commercial CDL Handbook)

The Doubles / Triples Endorsement (T) test is a series of 20 multiple choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 correctly, with a minimum score of 80%. This endorsement grants you the ability to drive a combination of multiple trailers attached to one truck or power unit.

 

Passenger

(Section 4 of the TX Commercial CDL Handbook)

The Passenger Endorsement (P) test is made up of 20 questions. You must answer at least 16 correctly to score a minimum passing score of 80%. With this endorsement you can drive vehicles that will have 16 or more passengers. You are required to take a knowledge and driving exam as well as a vision test.

 

School Bus

(Section 10 of the TX Commercial CDL Handbook)

The School Bus Endorsement (S) requires a passing score of at least 80%. The test is compiled of 20 multiple choice questions, you must answer at least 16 questions correctly. You will need the Class B with passenger endorsement, and you are also required to pass a DOT physical annually & pre-employment drug testing. You must participate and pass a 20-hour Texas School Bus Driver Certification Class, the State license check and criminal history check. With successful completion you will become a School Bus Operator.
